Frances Federer
(formerly Binnington)
Frances' reputation as a gilder and dedicated
teacher stretches from London, England, to Europe and to
both coasts of the U.S. Many, many students have passed through
her workshops.
She has been gilding since the early seventies,
having earned a degree in graphic design, specializing in
illustration, from London's Camberwell School of Art.
Her particular field of study has been "verre églomisé," which
is the cold application of precious leaf to the back of glass,
with engraving and painting. She is passionate about exploring
the many ways of embellishing glass with combinations of
precious metal leaf and color, whether this is to create
mirrors, table tops or wall coverings, or now to create works
of art in their own right. She has worked for an international
list of clients and exhibits her work.
Frances has been accepted to the Royal College of Art, London,
in October 2007 to start an M/Phil./PhD degree in gold and
glass.
Frances' work is in the permanent collections
of both Corning Museum of Glass, New York and the Victoria
and Albert Museum, London.
