What techniques are taught?
Preparation of glass; laying out of design; making of size; handling 23 ct. gold leaf. Laying gold onto water size, as well as oil size. Burnishing and steaming the gold; engraving the gold and distressing (aging) it. Backing up with oil colors; isolating gold with asphaltum; removing excess gold with abrasive powders. Laying of silver leaf, overall final backing up with oil colors.
What projects will we do?
A sample glass is made using most of the techniques listed above, with a variety of different precious metals, such as Moon Gold, Green Gold, White Gold as well as above mentioned 23 carat gold. In addition, students will make a small mirror from scratch. It will have a decorative engraved gold barder, with a colored backing, and a silver leaf mirror.
Are we given notes?
Yes. You are given notes with detailed recipes, together with a supplies list, a list of suppliers on the East Coast, West Coast, and in the UK, and a book list. Students are encouraged to make notes on their sample pieces for later reference, for the time when they will look at the work and wonder, what on earth did I do there?
And can I do that again?
Are their places to stay in the neighborhood?
Yes. We are in a part of town that is tourist friendly, the Upper
Haight, formerly known as Haight-Ashbury, to those of you who are old
enough to remember. There are places I can recommend. We are a few blocks
up the hill from there.
When are your next classes?
I post them up as I schedule them. I plan them to accommodate demand. The dates are very flexible. Minimum number of students, 2.
What is the fee for classes?
Fees: £135.00 A deposit of £65.00 is required to book a space.
Materials Fee: £25.00
Are there any extra charges?
Yes. I make a charge of $15.00 for the gold leaf used during the class. Otherwise everything is supplied. I can supply students with more leaf should they need it.
