In this section you can see pieces that have been made as independent works. Images are often stimulated by historical examples of the art, such as the folk painting on glass prevalent in Central Europe in the late 18th and 19th centuries. Other work is stimulated by earlier periods, and from export Chinese painting on glass.

"In the Forest"

4' x 5'
Using 6 recycled windows, in a purpose built frame, I used the techniques described by Cennino Cennini in his 15th century treatise (trans. Daniel V Thompson, published by Dover Books). However, instead of a metal stylus I used sharpened sticks and cut down brushes, as I usually do, for the engraving, thereby saving myself several years hard labour.

"Annie Get Your Gun"

Overall size: 13" x 15" x 3" (33 x 38 x 8cm)
Both the front and back glasses are decorated with engraved gold and silver leaf to depict on the front glass, heavy curtaining at the top and sides, with a lighter net curtain in white gold, hanging across the front. The heavy curtaining is painted a deep crimson fading out to clear, to reveal the scene inside the box. On the back glass the only decoration is a hanging mirror engraved in gold and with silver leaf. The rest of that glass is clear, and has a fabric placed behind, as for wallpaper. In the space between is a living room-like setting, with a miniature standard lamp and a giltwood side chair. Resting on the chair's red upholstered seat is a rifle.

The floor is carpeted, with the carpeting extending up the two inside walls, and the same fabric covers a 3-sided panel attached to the underneath of the frame. Behind this structure is attached wiring and batteries for the standard lamp.

The frame is water gilded, by the artist, with 22 kt. gold leaf, with an earth red bole and gently distressed.

The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, has now acquired "Annie Get Your Gun" for their new Glass Galleries which will be opening in November, 2004.
